Uber and Lyft Driver Insurance Policies

While the other driver may have been the person to cause your accident, in the vast majority of cases, the compensation you receive will come from their personal insurance policy. When you are injured in a car crash involving a Lyft or Uber, you could seek additional compensation from the company’s insurance policies. However, the amount these policies cover can vary depending on what the driver’s status is.

Both Lyft and Uber carry two levels of insurance, the first for when their app is on in driver mode, and the second for when they have been matched with a rider.

Lyft Driver Insurance Policy

• While the Lyft app is in driver mode:
  • Up to $50,000 per person for bodily injury
  • Up to $100,000 total for bodily injury
  • Up to $25,000 total for property damage caused in the accident
• After matching with a passenger:
  • Up to $1 million for crashes caused by an uninsured/underinsured motorist
  • Up to $1 million of total liability coverage
  • Actual cash value/repair cost of the vehicle, whichever is less, with a $2,500 deductible

Uber Driver Insurance Policy

• While the Uber app is in driver mode:
  • Up to $50,000 per person for bodily injury
  • Up to $100,000 total for bodily injury
  • Up to $25,000 total for property damage caused in the accident
• After matching with a passenger:
  • Up to $1 million for crashes caused by an uninsured/underinsured motorist
  • Up to $1 million of total liability coverage
  • Actual cash value/repair cost of the vehicle, whichever is less, with a $1,000 deductible
